Emergency Lighting Inverter Systems Inverters have been designed to operate normal mains luminares at full brightness. Using existing light fittings eliminates the need for obtrusive luminaires being used just for emergency lighting. The output voltage is the same as the mains, allowing large areas to be covered with little voltage drop along cable runs. Systems are built to incorporate sensing from local lighting circuits. The maintained supply from the inverter system supplies these lamps should their supply be cut. This feature leaves the battery to power the inverter only in a total mains failure situation.

Operation is simple - under normal conditions the mains supply feeds the charger, keeping the battery fully charged. A by-pass circuit connects the lights to the mains, allowing them to be switched with other lights in the same area. When the mains fails, the inverter is started, drawing power from the battery to maintain those lights connected to it.
